Vitamin K and vascular calcification: relevance in nephrology

Vitamin K is primarily known for its role in blood clotting - but vitamin K2 in particular also performs important functions in blood vessels and bones. In this Expert Opinion, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Floege explains why patients with chronic kidney disease and dialysis are particularly affected by a vitamin K2 deficiency - and why studies with synthetic K2 have so far proved ineffective. Clinical study results and therapeutic implications will be discussed.
