A network meta-analysis: Effectiveness of exercise therapy for knee or hip osteoarthritis

This Medudy course is a video tutorial for physicians on the topic of "Effectiveness of exercise therapy for knee or hip osteoarthritis". The format used here is a so-called "Journal Club Summary", in which we summarize the latest and most clinically relevant studies for you.

Osteoarthritis is a common joint disease that is associated with pain and impairment. The main aim of treatment is to relieve the pain without causing unwanted side effects. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and paracetamol are among the most commonly prescribed painkillers. However, their use can be associated with complications and risks, especially in older people. Although exercise is recognized as a basic therapy for osteoarthritis, its efficacy compared to analgesics remains open as few direct comparisons are available in the literature. Previous randomized controlled trials yielded conflicting results. The aim of this network meta-analysis was therefore to compile all relevant studies and compare the effects of these treatments.

Note: All "speakers" appearing in the Medudy videos are AI-based avatars used to improve the didactics of the videos. The people on whom the avatars are based have explicitly consented to their use. All content is based on high-quality scientific sources and is created and reviewed by the Medudy medical team.

At the end of this training you will know:

  • current clinical practice in the treatment of stent-related symptoms of the lower urinary tract
  • the potential benefits of exercise over paracetamol and NSAIDs
  • the potential limitations of exercise compared to paracetamol and NSAIDs
